Warriors and Amazons: A Tribute to Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell with The Art Order Opening March 19th, 2016 ArtOrder and Gallery Provocateur are teaming up to recognize and acknowledge Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell for their contributions to the illustration industry, and the art world in general. A few years ago, Gallery Provocateur & The Art Order teamed up to do a Tribute to Frank Frazetta Art Order challenge and Gallery Provocateur Art exhibition. Both the ArtOrder® challenge and the ensuing art show were well loved and well attended that we decided to take this concept on again. This time though, we wanted to honor someone that was still available - so they could feel the love and adoration of the community. Think of it as a giant “Thank You” card for someone that has inspired us, motivated us, taught us, and been a beacon in the illustration world. BORIS VALLEJO & JULIE BELL
Boris and Julie have rocked the art world for years. They are most well known for their powerful images of stoic warriors, beautiful amazons and fearsome monsters. Their exquisite use of color and texture elevate the imaginative realism of their works. Their works can be seen through out the fantasy and sci-fi illustration world. They have worked for virtually every major publishing house with a SFF line, and can be seen on album covers, comics, video game art, and motion picture advertising. Now, as if their careers aren’t full enough already, there are also tireless teachers and mentors. Plain and simple, they are just great people. Boris Vallejo is America’s premier fantasy artist. His works are known and loved around the world. Boris is famous for his illustrations of Tarzan, Conan the Barbarian, Doc Savage and many other fantasy characters, as well as movie poster illustration, advertisement illustration, and artwork for collectibles, trading cards, and sculpture. Julie Bell is a world renowned, award winning fantasy artist and wildlife painter. Julie has won two Chelsea Awards and was the designer of the popular and award-winning Dragons of Destiny series. She also has won numerous first place awards in the Art Renewal Center’s International Salon and has been named as a Living Master. Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell are married and often collaborate on projects. They have worked on many paintings together for advertising campaigns such as Nike, Inc., Coca-Cola, and Toyota. Challenge & Exhibition Concept This is a tribute to Boris and Julie, so we were looking for pieces that pay respect to their work. Submissions were selected of pieces that are evocative of their work but not a carbon copy or literal rendition of it. It must convey the essence of their distinctive work. Both Boris' and Julie's compositions are strong and based on classical principles, masterpieces of energy and color. Epic and powerful.
