I was inspired by where Mr. Frazetta grew up for this piece. A simple
upbringing surrounded by an urban jungle that spawned some of the
greatest fantasy artworks of all time. I drew on some of his warmer
color palettes with a strong composition that, I think, is epic in its
own way.
My submission is reminiscent of the travel art that appeared around the
same time Mr. Frazetta was born. I incorporated a bit of whimsy with the
large lizard atop the Brooklyn Bridge, similar to those that appear in
numerous Frazetta paintings, as well as one of his more popular
characters: The Death Dealer. If you look closely you can see the Dealer
shedding a single tear.
Thank you for your time and consideration, and for curating such a
wonderful show.
Sincerely,
Steve Thomas
