Larkin summons the
creatures of land, air, and imagination to map the internal landscape of
the mind. Chimeras, Gorgons, rabbits, and other creatures come together
with humans to inhabit a world of dreams and nightmares. Personally
symbolic, his work requires the willingness to give into the first
impulse to identify with the imagery. Like a mad scientist, he combines
personal symbols and biology as he explores the relationships between
different organic forms.
Larkin works in mixed
media, combining drawing and painting with sculptural inclusions, found
objects, and fiber. His draftsmanship in 2-dimensions is complemented
by the organic mazes of crocheted fibers worked around or into the
surface of each piece.
