Gigi "DeLuxe"
Gross' art is as eclectic as the heritages that flow through her veins
and the home in which she produces. Living and breathing all forms of
creation, she is not content to limited her expression to one medium.
Whether it is painting (her first love), sculpture, music, fashion, or
even her own body, Gross' range is not one that can be easily defined.
That range
draws inspiration from the variety in which she has surrounded herself,
from the predominately working class neighborhood of her youth where she
spent her time among the decrepit abattoirs and train tracks of
Chicago's South Side, to her relationship in her teenage years with her
uncle (a queer artist and incredible influence), later on as a noted
member of the infamous Club Kid party scene in New York's nightlife, and
now as the mother of twins. With an aesthetic that blends a respect to
the traditions and techniques of the Old Masters, the Secessionist
spirit to explore and express without the restraints of conventional
academic regiment, the abandon of the Lowbrow movement, and just a hint
of Young British Artists' cheekiness, Gross' vision is one of
ever-expanding desire to grow through conception.
Gross has
shown all over the the United States, in prominent galleries in Chicago,
Los Angeles, and even New York's legendary CBGB's.
Gigi Gross
works and lives in Chicago.
Artist Statement:
Being self
taught, I would much rather paint without abandon, and make the
necessary mistakes to grow as an artist naturally, then have someone
tell me what I should or what I shouldn't do.
My first love
is painting but I like to challenge myself with different mediums, I
esp. love making art dolls/sculptures.
Some of my
work is related to my dreams- honestly though I never know what I'm
going to paint until I'm standing right there and sketching on my
canvas.
What my art
personally means to me doesn't matter, all that matters is that I
create.
