The Art of Michael Calandra

Working primarily with airbrush, acrylic paint, and colored pencils, fantasy artist Michael Calandra strives
to create images of a dark and haunting nature. Often depicting a commanding and sensuous female figure,
he uses dramatic poses, lighting, and color to produce atmospheric settings that reflect the essence of his subjects.

Michael’s fantasy work has been featured in many publications, including the iconic Heavy Metal Magazine,
as a gallery artist (March 2007), three times as a cover artist (September 2007, May 2009, Spring 2010), and as a 2009, 2010, and 2011 Art of Heavy Metal Calendar artist.
His work has appeared in showroom galleries in International Illustrator, Airbrush Art and Action,
and is featured in Veronika Kotlajic’s “The Perfect Muse” book, Bianca Beauchamp’s “Fetish Sex Symbol”, and
“Drakaina – Fantasy of Desires”.

Art Scene International (April 2008) featured Michael’s art an in depth feature interview and tutorial on the
creation of his painting “Destroyer” featuring Bianca Beauchamp. In the Spring 2009 issue, Art Scene International followed the creation of “Rhiannon” from start to finished as a published tutorial. Visual Arts Illustrated will feature Michael's painting "Forever", and Airbrush Step-by-Step Magazine will showcase "Moon Maiden" (with Veronika Kotlajic) as tutorials in their fall 2010 issues.

Fantasy author George R. R. Martin (A Game of Thrones) enlisted his services through Fantasy Flight Games
to work on the series of game cards for the A Game of Thrones role playing game.

His work with Image Ten, Inc. is well known in the horror arena, as he has worked with most of the original
cast of the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead to create cast signed movie posters and character vignettes.
Michael’s original art and prints are featured on many websites, including Heavy Metal, AirbrushTour.com
on-line fantasy magazine Estronomicon, and Epilogue.net

His first children’s book, “Strong Head Sam, the Cowgirl Hero” written by author Mary Papadimos, is available through Amazon.com

He has an on-going gallery as a featured artist on Heavy Metal Magazine’s site metaltv.com, and his
digital images are available through Stickerchick and Wireless Developer as screensavers.

His art can be found all over the world as book covers, cd covers, illustrations, in private collections,
calendars, and as licensed images.
Michael resides in Sylvania, Ohio, where he owns and operates a frame shop and art studio.
