Frank Frazetta Tribute Exhibition

Judging Process

We received over 300 entries and were just overwhelmed by the quality of the work.  The success of the sheer amount of submissions is the sheer proof of the number of lives Frank's art has inspired.  Very humbling experience.  Everyone who entered a submission is a winner, however, the truest representations of Frank's inspiration were selected to be included in the exhibition.

Every judge was asked to pick their top 5 selections ranked in order.  We asked if the judges had time to comment on each piece as to why it was in their top 5.  Every piece picked in the top 5 was automatically included in the show.

Many of the top 5 selections were picked by multiple judges.

Christopher Shy and Daren Bader were tied for the most top 5 picks and also picked as their first place pick by the judges.
We therefore have two very strong pieces tied for first place.

The judges also were asked to pick 45 additional selections.  From these lists we determined the remaining selections for the exhibition.
Every piece in the exhibition was picked by at least two or more judges.

Jon Schindehette, Creative Art Director of Wizards of the Coast, said it best as to how the judges approached the selection process...
"There were so many pieces, in so many styles, and so many levels...it was a tough choice.

I tended to pick pieces that felt more like a homage to Frank than just a vanity piece or a "hey this was one I did a while ago and think it might fit". I tended to be attracted to ones that picked up on some of the vibes that Frank exhibited in his body of works - love of anatomy, sexiness and power, palette choices, and a bit of humor. Thanks for allowing me to be part of this. I am very honored."
